Community Living magazine was started by Elinor Harbridge in 1987 as a campaigning magazine about people with learning difficulties with the charismatic David Brandon as its first editor, never afraid to speak out and challenge conventional wisdoms.
She continued to publish the magazine for the last 30 years until Elfrida Islington took it on in 2005.
Its continuation also owes much to the support of its sponsors, committed to similar values and in 2011 its charity C.L.Initiatives ltd was formed to run it.
Elinor’s editorship has maintained its campaigning nature, standing for the equal rights in every aspect of life for people with learning disabilities.
In April 2017, Simon Jarrett who’d been the Arts Editor took over as editor (see Archive 30.3 Interview ‘End of an Era – start of a new one’). From Spring 2018 Christy Lawrance became Production Editor working with Simon – their first joint issue being published April 2018.
